You can ask Vector "Alexa" questions like "what's the weather?" plus he he has all the charm of Cozmo. He can recognize your face, he has better motion sensors (so he doesn't fall off the table like Cozmo tends to do), and he knows when to go back to his space to recharge. He's more like your personal assistant than a robot child who always wants to play games with you and WIN. He has a timer, built in camera (you can ask him to take a picture), and can play Blackjack with you. He also syncs with Alexa so you can add items to a shopping list, set reminders, control household devices, and more. He will even come when called!<br />

We had 106 kits which have circulated 1,047 times since it's inception in 2015. Here is the top 10 list of most circulated. These include hobby kits, puzzles, cake pans, instruments, science robots/STEM, and American Girl dolls.<br />
<br />
The ukulele kits (we have one soprano and one concert kit) have been around the longest and have circulated 106 times total. Just remember someone should change the strings yearly and definitely include a tuner (we like the snark) as new strings on a uke take a while to break in.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OA5HDc2ucZk/W-23_V0YOjI/AAAAAAAACK8/UBum_LXOv1MXxEFq3G7Hit0amIVkKfOQgCLcBGAs/s1600/concertuke.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-OA5HDc2ucZk/W-23_V0YOjI/AAAAAAAACK8/UBum_LXOv1MXxEFq3G7Hit0amIVkKfOQgCLcBGAs/s320/concertuke.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
Surprisingly our meditation toolbox comes in second with 51 checkouts. It is just some CDs and a DVD. This one has also been around since the inception of our kits.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2XzaBwUKaOQ/W-24XOAd1WI/AAAAAAAACLE/O1QthH4O-jAOHTLbnuBkbHvEgCjzdAO9gCLcBGAs/s1600/meditation.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-2XzaBwUKaOQ/W-24XOAd1WI/AAAAAAAACLE/O1QthH4O-jAOHTLbnuBkbHvEgCjzdAO9gCLcBGAs/s320/meditation.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Next up is our virtual reality headset toolbox. It is a Homido Virtual Reality headset. If that is too pricey, I recommend <a href="https://www.amazon.com/s/?ie=UTF8&keywords=google+cardboard&tag=googhydr-20&index=aps&hvadid=241927158882&hvpos=1t1&hvnetw=g&hvrand=8391095934435247674&hvpone=&hvptwo=&hvqmt=e&hvdev=c&hvdvcmdl=&hvlocint=&hvlocphy=1018185&hvtargid=kwd-295682935910&ref=pd_sl_9s7k2g0qyc_e_p38" target="_blank">Google Cardboard. </a><br />

Our sewing machine comes in 5th. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Knitting is a great idea for a toolbox and very popular but limit the number of needles if circulation plans on counting them during every check in.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
The Bongos come in 7th. Also to note it is easier to care for than ukulele.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-voVC1m2vk1I/W-25u2wnSyI/AAAAAAAACLs/Aw_ndHVYYNQwhThwH8Sr9mjDN1awQphLwCLcBGAs/s1600/bongos.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1175" data-original-width="1600" height="234" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-voVC1m2vk1I/W-25u2wnSyI/AAAAAAAACLs/Aw_ndHVYYNQwhThwH8Sr9mjDN1awQphLwCLcBGAs/s320/bongos.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Banjo comes in 8th with 33 checkouts. Just make sure someone knows how to restring and care for this..perhaps the local music shop?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ANzeVfCVwE0/W-26C24TgMI/AAAAAAAACL0/hgi_u7SuD2A3ueI_lRC26CLGj9vfkhG9QCLcBGAs/s1600/BANJO3.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="999" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-ANzeVfCVwE0/W-26C24TgMI/AAAAAAAACL0/hgi_u7SuD2A3ueI_lRC26CLGj9vfkhG9QCLcBGAs/s320/BANJO3.JPG" width="199" /></a></div>
<br />
Polymer clay sculpting kit would need some materials replacement if you want to include clay but it comes in 9th with 32 checkouts.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lT_kChli1zU/W-26KrvvkzI/AAAAAAAACME/qiX0nMW_5UMC5kVyMBZ5yu3dG6OIbxfzQCLcBGAs/s1600/polymerclay.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1067" data-original-width="1600" height="213" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-lT_kChli1zU/W-26KrvvkzI/AAAAAAAACME/qiX0nMW_5UMC5kVyMBZ5yu3dG6OIbxfzQCLcBGAs/s320/polymerclay.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
Last in our list, is the Go Pro Camera which has been replaced once already due to wear and tear. I would recommend NOT including all the other crazy pieces in it for the camera unless it is nicely labeled.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2QfvK57RGlA/W-26bqnJ41I/AAAAAAAACMQ/M_sk4IpUDSg1Y1NeJ9qHW4ej08LNUU0VACLcBGAs/s1600/gopro.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1200" data-original-width="1600" height="240" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-2QfvK57RGlA/W-26bqnJ41I/AAAAAAAACMQ/M_sk4IpUDSg1Y1NeJ9qHW4ej08LNUU0VACLcBGAs/s320/gopro.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
The lowest circulated items for us are the cake pans, a computer maintenance kit, world travel adapter kit (for apple and other), and some of the fancier but lesser know board games like Trophy Buck and Chupacabra.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The DFL currently experiments with hobby, STEAM, and Technology kits that are housed both in the adult section and the kids room. These kits include musical instruments, video equipment, puzzles, cake plans, robots, looms, and more available for checkout. The kits are bought using our Amazon prime account, under the supervision of the head of circulation using a special makerspace kit budget and backed up by a kit committee made up of various departments to streamline the process. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
The kits with the most holds by far have been the <a href="https://www.nintendo.com/nes-classic/" target="_blank">Retro Nintendo</a> and <a href="https://www.nintendo.com/super-nes-classic/" target="_blank">Super Nintendo</a> Classic which were small batch pre-Christmas releases for the last two years. Rather than blowing the dirt out of your old cartridges, these consoles have games built in for your playing pleasure. According to Walmart, the Nintendo "classics" are on sale as of today. Our kit contains a small palm sized console, 2 controllers (try to upgrade wireless ones if you can), an ac adapter, and, I recommend, a carrying case. Poor circulation department doesn't have to count 100 knitting needles on this one.<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-feQmvmhrMZ8/W6ZfBgUx2wI/AAAAAAAACIk/fiAy6WLoEOAuVVKCJQD4uW0cJjFbRb_lQCLcBGAs/s1600/MPjZT3HGVICYbOecOb7k_h9bqvPd0j7j.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="420" data-original-width="740" height="181" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-feQmvmhrMZ8/W6ZfBgUx2wI/AAAAAAAACIk/fiAy6WLoEOAuVVKCJQD4uW0cJjFbRb_lQCLcBGAs/s320/MPjZT3HGVICYbOecOb7k_h9bqvPd0j7j.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
We also purchased <a href="https://enchroma.com/?gclid=EAIaIQobChMIr9zDtfbO3QIVhouzCh2dSA7TEAAYAiAAEgKp9fD_BwE" target="_blank">Encrhoma Color Blind Corrective Glasses. </a> We are hoping with the large price tag ($300+), patrons would be more likely to try before they buy. The glasses don't work for everyone. We got red/green colorblind corrective since my boyfriend became the test subject for them. Unfortunately they didn't work for him! Good thing I didn't buy them as a birthday present. Only 5 checkouts since June but we do keep them behind the desk rather than out on the floor due to the cost. They need to be worn for at least a week to experience the changes so be sure to consider that when determining how long the kits can be circulated to a specific patron. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-stsjgNIQ6VU/W6ZgfmD4xSI/AAAAAAAACIw/fMXHnYU1ZNgggHgRslO6ZtTU_87Vwur1ACLcBGAs/s1600/Glasses-That-Correct-Color-Blindness-28-Images.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="481" data-original-width="728" height="211" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-stsjgNIQ6VU/W6ZgfmD4xSI/AAAAAAAACIw/fMXHnYU1ZNgggHgRslO6ZtTU_87Vwur1ACLcBGAs/s320/Glasses-That-Correct-Color-Blindness-28-Images.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I just saw <a href="http://www.pittsfieldlibrary.org/" target="_blank">Berkshire Athenaeum</a> bought <a href="https://www.spectacles.com/?utm_source=google&utm_medium=cpc&utm_campaign=Hardware_G_Search_USA_EN_Branded_EM&utm_content=Snapchat_Glasses_EM&utm_term=snapchat%20glasses&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIlarQnfjO3QIVw4WzCh0cdgbFEAAYASAAEgJZy_D_BwE" target="_blank">Snapchat Spectacles</a> which aren't cheap either with a $200 price tag. These look like regular sunglasses but they have built in cameras to record video and sync to your phone. We're hoping to get those sometime in the future. The charger is built into the Spectacle 2 case which is genius! We have trouble with our Gopro, which is also popular, but comes back missing pieces all the time. Hopefully these will be a better solution. </div>
</div>
</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w1B5ssH2HhY/W6ZhyH3GiXI/AAAAAAAACJI/e4yrtR9CINgSpoWZNoIU79I9XgF6Q-PogCLcBGAs/s1600/download.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="151" data-original-width="334" height="144" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-w1B5ssH2HhY/W6ZhyH3GiXI/AAAAAAAACJI/e4yrtR9CINgSpoWZNoIU79I9XgF6Q-PogCLcBGAs/s320/download.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div>
In the kids room our <a href="https://www.fisher-price.com/en_CA/brands/think-and-learn/products/Think-and-Learn-Code-a-Pillar" target="_blank">Code-a-pillar</a> is our latest addition as well as a boy doll for our "American Girl Doll" collection (we get them the dolls from Target's "Generation" collection). Despite bad reviews of the code-a-pillar breaking quickly, it has been working fine for us so far.<br />
<br />
<b>*update on Code-a-pillar as of 11/15* It broke. Major design flaw: it is not recommended to go on carpet! The customer service reps were great in getting us a free replacement however I don't think it will last long if it is a preschool toy not meant to be used on rugs where children play. The hair from someone's carpet got caught around the head wheel and it burnt out the motor in less than 4 circulations.</b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Xfa075dJX8/W6ZosBv0HSI/AAAAAAAACJc/J0mcVWhhH-Mnrt-2sxcZJkqr6Q_Y0jgDwCLcBGAs/s1600/4810374f-8803-4337-ab1d-c35dcd544ce7_1.d0a5f75e889b828e2adcb1d0e7557714.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1600" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-9Xfa075dJX8/W6ZosBv0HSI/AAAAAAAACJc/J0mcVWhhH-Mnrt-2sxcZJkqr6Q_Y0jgDwCLcBGAs/s320/4810374f-8803-4337-ab1d-c35dcd544ce7_1.d0a5f75e889b828e2adcb1d0e7557714.jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div>
<a href="https://www.town.duxbury.ma.us/borrow/unusual-items-borrow" target="_blank">Here is a complete list of our kits.</a></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>Some things to think about when purchasing kits:</b></div>
<div>
1. Packaging? Most of ours live in Tupperware bins of various sizes.</div>
<div>
2. Number of items? Check with circulation and make sure there's a handy labeled picture to help guide them not just an item list. What does the ac adapter look like?</div>
<div>
3. Does it have batteries or other things that will need to be replaced (consumables)?</div>
<div>
4. Who is going to re-order consumables and what budget will it come from? For example, who is going to restring the ukulele every year? or when a string breaks?</div>
<div>
5. Best place to store them? They must be easily seen by the patron and at the same time you might want employee supervision as well. Right now they live near circulation between our DVD collection and new adult books and audio. It's a very high traffic area.We're also thinking of putting call-out advertisements in with the adult nonfiction to led patrons to the kits. </div>
<div>
6. What to call the collection? Kits? Unusual Objects? Library of Things? We are thinking of doing a patron google survey to determine this. Right now it is called Unusual Objects but are knitting needles really unusual?</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Share with us the most unusual thing you have in your collection! </div>

I have been newly promoted to Head of Children's Department at my current library and have not had too much time to experiment in Makerspace land...HOWEVER....<br />
<br />
I did go to Gamestop to drool over buying a <a href="https://www.nintendo.com/switch/" target="_blank">Nintendo Switch</a> because I love <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wGQHQc_3ycE" target="_blank">Super Mario games</a> and noticed this....<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5AtRNE2XGwY/WvH7c4QhnRI/AAAAAAAACEo/d6eGa4879NIXi2etMpD7u0SpwJ5bpiGXACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_2141.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-5AtRNE2XGwY/WvH7c4QhnRI/AAAAAAAACEo/d6eGa4879NIXi2etMpD7u0SpwJ5bpiGXACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_2141.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Even Nintendo has jumped on the makerspace train with <a href="https://labo.nintendo.com/?gclid=COjOwaru9toCFYHRswodRFIDFg&gclsrc=ds" target="_blank">LABO</a>. I don't think it would hold up as a checkout-able kit but if you do have a Nintendo Switch as a gaming cart or program item at your library it would be a neat thing to display or build one of the kits with a small group. If you don't want to spend the money to purchase the official kit, maybe kids can be encouraged to create their own cardboard inventions for the Switch using <a href="https://www.make.do/" target="_blank">Makedos</a> instead?<br />
<br />

</center>
</center>
<center>
</center>
<center>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">roving wool</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
We've been getting into needle felting lately at the library. It is really amazing what someone can make just by stabbing wool over and over again...talk about stress relief from crafting!!<br />
<br />
One beginners tip is using cookie cutters when you are first starting out to make easy shapes. So why not 3D print our own cookie cutters? Here's one of a <a href="https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:773182" target="_blank">cat face I found from Yeggi: </a> It took about an hour to print actual size on our Ultimaker 2.<br />
<br />
<br />
Before we get started, here are the needle felting <b>tools you will need: </b><br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.amazon.com/OPount-Needle-Felting-Starter-Colors/dp/B01N4K6XFJ/ref=sr_1_5?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1514318610&sr=1-5&keywords=needle+felting+kit" target="_blank">Needle Felting Kit (this one comes with roving wool too)</a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://img-s3.onedio.com/id-57347c8f555365205339b2b0/rev-0/raw/s-1536990d504a4133c44c83633c5c47d7e678046f.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Related image" border="0" class="irc_mi" height="110" src="https://img-s3.onedio.com/id-57347c8f555365205339b2b0/rev-0/raw/s-1536990d504a4133c44c83633c5c47d7e678046f.gif" style="margin-top: 87px;" width="200" /></a></div>
and YES, wear those leather caps for your fingers even if they look goofy. The needle is not like a normal needle. It is barbed AND IT HURTS.<br />
<br />
For more color options you can <a href="https://www.amazon.com/SOLEDI-Fibre-Wool-Roving-Colors/dp/B016O6U3OG/ref=sr_1_1_sspa?s=arts-crafts&ie=UTF8&qid=1514319485&sr=1-1-spons&keywords=roving+wool&psc=1" target="_blank">buy bulk roving wool</a> and if you like going with a cute animal kit <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Hamanaka-triplets-Nyankoro-Strawberry-H441-367/dp/B00EE19UQG/ref=pd_sim_201_2?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1&refRID=0SE38Z37H0G73G3675V6" target="_blank">Hamanka</a> has a ton!<br />

<b><br /></b><b>Instructions:</b><br />
Grab some wool and place it in the cookie cutter shape.<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ggagp1LJk2o/WkKrkyigeyI/AAAAAAAAB-I/dIgrDOFe4B0QpjBbragBsYjRh73UxWtgwCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_1770.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-ggagp1LJk2o/WkKrkyigeyI/AAAAAAAAB-I/dIgrDOFe4B0QpjBbragBsYjRh73UxWtgwCLcBGAs/s200/IMG_1770.jpg" width="150" /></a><br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-loUaK-u7Sms/U5bvrFYqhnI/AAAAAAAAER8/rYacwnVh42E/s1600/animated+gif+of+needle+felting+in+cookie+cutter.gif" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img alt="Image result for stabbing needle felt gif" border="0" class="irc_mi" height="112" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-loUaK-u7Sms/U5bvrFYqhnI/AAAAAAAAER8/rYacwnVh42E/s200/animated+gif+of+needle+felting+in+cookie+cutter.gif" style="margin-top: 180px;" width="200" /></a></div>
Hold down with your hand (just not too close to where you are stabbing) and go to town using your needle. Keep flipping it over front and back periodically so it doesn't stick to the foam. Once you can't pull it apart with your fingers it is done. I made a thin one (took about half an hour of stabbing) just to see if we could actually do this with grade school students in a decent amount of program time. The stabbing reminds me a lot of how a tattoo gun works.<br />

Place them where you want and MORE STAB! You can also buy little plastic eyes that you can glue in instead. Be careful of the needles themselves, I already snapped one. They don't have too much give if you start to bend it.<br />

Just do a search on Pinterest for needle felting to see all the amazing things that you can do with needle felting. Not only does it incorporate 3D printing but you can enhance sewing or embroidery skills. And for the crazy cat ladies among us.... #lifegoals<br />

Thanks to <a href="https://serialpodcast.org/" target="_blank">Serial</a>) so I thought I'd take a break from makerspaces and share my favorites so far..<br />
<br />
<a href="https://99percentinvisible.org/" target="_blank">99 % Invisible</a>- Did you know that the CIA can come visit a studio set and shut down the operation if prop money used is too "realistic"? Why aren't we on the metric system yet? These are just a few of the small things that make HUGE impacts. This is the podcast for unsung heroes and things you would never hear about otherwise.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://gimletmedia.com/reply-all/" target="_blank">Reply All</a>- How easy is it to hack Trumps phone? Is Facebook really listening to us through our phones? a fascinating technology podcast for all people, minus the crazy jargon, that shapes our lives whether we know it or not.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://revisionisthistory.com/" target="_blank">Revisionist History</a>- Malcolm Gladwell, one of my favorite non-fiction authors, talks about the little things that make a big difference throughout history. Who knew he hated golf courses so much?<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.frowl.org/worstbestsellers/" target="_blank">Worst Best Sellers-</a> these librarians are willing to take one for the team and read/discuss the worst offenders on the best seller list. This podcast is filled with lots of laughs.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://stownpodcast.org/" target="_blank">S- Town</a>- a fan of Serial constantly emails NPR for someone to come out and investigate a murder cover up in his rural town in Alabama. What one reporter discovers is so much deeper than that as he develops a bond with the fan and his friends. My favorite podcast of the year is an amazing sociological study that resonates so much with what is going on in the US today.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://tanispodcast.com/" target="_blank">Tanis</a>- Ok...for about 2 episodes I thought this was real and I went around telling everyone about this area in the Pacific Northwest that is like a black hole for bad juju (like the black lodge in Twin Peaks).<br />
<iframe allowfullscreen="" class="giphy-embed" frameborder="0" height="206" src="https://giphy.com/embed/A04IFosZ7mMSc" width="280"></iframe><br />
<a href="https://giphy.com/gifs/twin-peaks-black-lodge-little-man-from-another-place-A04IFosZ7mMSc">via GIPHY</a><br />
I had no experience with the podcast's other popular fictional podcast <a href="http://theblacktapespodcast.com/" target="_blank">The Black Tapes</a> so I assumed this reporter who blends fiction with true historical events to explain a large government coverup of a mysterious moving place called Tanis was legit. I mean who really trusts the government anymore? The host Nic portrays himself as a podcast reporter involved with a hacker from the deep web as he regularly updates his real podcast boss on how it is going. In my defense, I had been re watching alot of old X-Files episodes. By episode 2 I realized that all the parts are played by 2 people. This podcast does open up a whole new medium for those who want to present stories without writing a book or having to deal with being published. I am also enjoying their newest addition about a historical game called <a href="http://rabbits./">Rabbits.</a><br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.switchedonpop.com/" target="_blank">Switched on Pop</a>- why was Justin Beiber's Despacito such a phenomenon? (come on admit it we were all singing along). Although I'm a big ukulele player, I had no musical background otherwise and these hosts are great at talking about fascinating music theory of the popular songs of today.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.crimetownshow.com/" target="_blank">Crimetown</a>- growing up in Fall River, MA and hearing personal stories my mom told me about how everyone loved criminal and ex-mayor of Providence, RI, Buddy Cianci, I could not resist a podcast all about him and the underground crime syndicate.<br />
<br />
If you're going to add podcasting to your makerspace or digital media lab, I suggest listening to a wide variety of podcasts and take a look at what you enjoy about them. For me, I love clever segments like Reply All's Yes Yes No where their boss from the baby boomer generation asks their Millennial hosts to explain a tweet that he has no idea about. I also enjoy Worst Best Seller's The Rock vs Wolverine: Movie Adaptation Starring Roles and when the co-host's cat gives book reviews. These segments are endearing as you learn as much about the hosts as you do about the subject.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8597750566049912199.post-54398062169302281512017-11-22T07:21:00.002-08:002017-11-22T09:20:28.523-08:00It's Almost Time For Hour of Code<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<br />
<a href="https://hourofcode.com/us" target="_blank">Hour of Code </a>is coming December 4th-11 so be sure to take part in their online activities and let your local schools know how easy it is to join up. In addition this year I will be hosting a littleBits & Lego WeDo workshops after school for drop in activities. One of my favorite robots, <a href="https://www.makewonder.com/Dash" target="_blank">Dash</a> will probably make an appearance as well (shhhh don't tell Cozmo).<br />
<br />
<a href="http://littlebits.cc/" target="_blank">littleBits</a> has been doing a great job putting educators and technology business reps together for webinars so be sure to become a part of their email list. I recently attended:<br />
<br />
<a href="http://littlebits.cc/webinarhow-to-host-an-epic-hour-of-code?utm_campaign=EDU_Fall_2017&utm_medium=email&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-8W4KKf2eL6HvMkQlGE12PQRfCZDLB_fghmlYdRuQx37DVPEraMbf48UbYFpids_99qfRD9lY9iNrNm5sw9jezpcL_9_Q&_hsmi=58540673&utm_content=58540673&utm_source=hs_email&hsCtaTracking=2ac799d7-97b8-4cba-8e06-35b1f8d66942%7C81710f2a-fc1e-48d3-b5ce-d165344a7414" target="_blank">How to Host An Epic Hour of Code</a><br />
<br />
They are also adding lots of content to their library community blog like this post from one of their <a href="http://littlebits.cc/labrary?utm_campaign=EDU%20webinar&utm_source=hs_automation&utm_medium=email&utm_content=56690242&_hsenc=p2ANqtz-9NORadnJLOL2KJnp12PBi_ju06H5lD3FiorxV_sKdDHK-297hhutZ3uplkCDKpygo1GVcyD8ioX9W5pPlHx-Pj8trVpA&_hsmi=56690242" target="_blank">Global Chapters</a> including Educators Guide with lesson plans to help kick start your littleBits programming. One in particular is a <a href="https://shop.littlebits.cc/pages/code-kit-welcome" target="_blank">curriculum</a> using their coding kit. One thing I took away from the webinar that I didn't know was <a href="https://scratch.mit.edu/" target="_blank">Scratch</a> is also <a href="http://scratched.gse.harvard.edu/resources/creative-computing-guide-teachers" target="_blank">making lesson plans</a> to guide educators in using their products and hosting meetup groups for in person collaboration all over the US. It makes sense!<br />

<br />
Today's venture was a one-handed page holder that I saw on this post of <a href="http://twentytwowords.com/26-practical-products-with-tiny-but-life-changing-innovations/5/" target="_blank">tiny but life changing inventions</a>. I immediately got out my digital caliper and measured my thumb length and width. In less than 20 minutes, I made myself something similar using the cylinder shape, roof, and a user generated "mustache" shape. See the <a href="https://www.tinkercad.com/things/3MmK5cL9ori-one-handed-page-holder" target="_blank">tinkercad design</a>. It took about 1.5 hours to print on the normal CURA settings with the Ultimaker 2. I left the raft and supports everywhere just in case. It measures 89 mm x 30 mm x 25mm once grouped. Now I can hold my tea in one hand, and safely prop the book steadily in the other.<br />

I would be a little nervous about circulating it because it has many of the delicate wires that could easily be ripped out but it would be a perfect edition for <a href="https://hourofcode.com/us" target="_blank">Hour of Code activities</a> in December or other in house robot programs. Note: A tablet or phone is required to program the droid to complete missions.<br />

On the note of delicate wires, I am so sick and tired of the regular littleBits makerspace kits we have coming back with broken battery chords. </center>

I have pretty much replaced them every 2 checkouts. I just broke down and bought the <a href="https://shop.littlebits.cc/products/usb-power" target="_blank">USB bit</a> and the <a href="https://shop.littlebits.cc/products/usb-power-adapter-cable" target="_blank">AC adapter</a>. All batteries, power bits and chords will be removed! Here's <a href="http://librarymakerspace.blogspot.com/2016/12/science-toolboxes-update.html" target="_blank">an old post</a> about what to include in those littlebits checkout kits because be warned some of those bits do not survive the wear and tear of children's take home use.<br />

Of course since I don't have the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07233FGQ6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">ball bearings</a>, I tried to explain it to them that it is better to have the bearing first then measure around it but they happily 3D printed ones that they could just spin using their fingers. They kinda reminded me of brass knuckles....<br />
<br />
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oNuFu_Ov-kM/WX-COAk2mRI/AAAAAAAABzE/Jt1alpOjPY8pXML6b_Z50f9C4UhzmXfNACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_0906.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-oNuFu_Ov-kM/WX-COAk2mRI/AAAAAAAABzE/Jt1alpOjPY8pXML6b_Z50f9C4UhzmXfNACLcBGAs/s200/IMG_0906.jpg" width="150" /></a>Coincidentally, I saw a post on Facbook highlighting how to build custom spinners. <a href="https://teenservicesdepot.wordpress.com/2017/07/21/3d-print-your-own-fidget-spinner/comment-page-1/#comment-28" target="_blank">This blog</a> has everything you will need and I am very appreciative. It took me a few tries to get the exact measurements so that the bearing would fit in snugly but not too loose as it would fall right out. My measurements for the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07233FGQ6/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o01_s03?ie=UTF8&psc=1" target="_blank">22mm bearing</a> was using 2 cylinders in Tinkercad, one cylinder measures 27mm all around, 7mm high with an inner "hole" cylinder of 22.5mm all around, 7mm high. I highly recommend using Tinkercad BETA. It allows you to just type measurements in once you click on the white or black boxes. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hi31jDw0DxA/WXzuNnG2VqI/AAAAAAAAByM/GbNk_g9Nctwy2ex8IL97i73H5ITWHcitACLcBGAs/s1600/fidget.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="774" data-original-width="1404" height="352" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Hi31jDw0DxA/WXzuNnG2VqI/AAAAAAAAByM/GbNk_g9Nctwy2ex8IL97i73H5ITWHcitACLcBGAs/s640/fidget.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
My class structure will be as follows:<br />
1.Search Tinkercad for something that they want to use as the design spinner....(In the above example Yoda). I'm assuming once they see mine they won't want to use any of the pre-made shapes on the right. I will explain to them that whatever they chose has to be flat. Think cookie cutters.<br />
<br />
2. Once we copy and tinker the specific object from another user, I am going to teach them how to duplicate CNTRL + D, as the keyboard shortcut. Then we are going to grab a pre-made cylinder and stretch it out for the outer circle 27mm all around, 7mm high then duplicate it and make it smaller for the inner circle 22.5mm all around, 7mm high, and make it a hole.<br />
<br />
3. This is a great time to teach about the align tool as I want to make sure both cylinders are selected and they will be aligned in the center using the middle black buttons (one is showing red in the picture below). If they are already aligned, the button will fade out. I can't believe I haven't used this tool more often. It is a huge time saver.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-olRUoH_IsgU/WXzwsfSX7TI/AAAAAAAAByU/MRdPd0nQJVg8NXQF4vqr040mzpe4_aPhgCLcBGAs/s1600/Untitled-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="282" data-original-width="372" height="242" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-olRUoH_IsgU/WXzwsfSX7TI/AAAAAAAAByU/MRdPd0nQJVg8NXQF4vqr040mzpe4_aPhgCLcBGAs/s320/Untitled-2.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
4. Once the 2 cylinders are aligned, I will show them the group tool and then how to move it into the center and then use the duplicate tool to make 3 more Yodas and the align tool once again to put all the Yoda's at an equal distant apart. Then group them all together and measure the final size. <br />
<br />

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h2h0dmdGWng/WXzzLAGtlTI/AAAAAAAAByk/VmAutCd834wIyEmZgPv_Thjk9DS2NxhtQCLcBGAs/s1600/Untitled-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="480" data-original-width="882" height="174" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-h2h0dmdGWng/WXzzLAGtlTI/AAAAAAAAByk/VmAutCd834wIyEmZgPv_Thjk9DS2NxhtQCLcBGAs/s320/Untitled-1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Depending on the level of proficiency in the class since we only have an hour, I might print a bunch of the locking buttons for the spinners myself to save time or I might just skip it entirely!<br />
<br />
I am also going to show them how many tries I actually did to get the ring correct. If you are having trouble getting the ball bearing in, my suggestion was to freeze the bearing so that the metal would contract enough to squeeze it in and it will probably never ever come out again. AH SCIENCE!<br />

<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UOPrWofWLJk/WV1EESeE42I/AAAAAAAABwg/if6PYFPqD4MQ0hc_bowCcbNawULwNz2zwCLcBGAs/s1600/pokemon-day.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="630" data-original-width="1200" height="168" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UOPrWofWLJk/WV1EESeE42I/AAAAAAAABwg/if6PYFPqD4MQ0hc_bowCcbNawULwNz2zwCLcBGAs/s320/pokemon-day.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
It has been a year since Pokemon Go first took the world by storm. The question...who is still playing? Well at level 34 and counting, I'm still all in. I need over 1 million XP to get to level 35. It will take me MONTHS. I was pretty excited to see what the anniversary had in store. I was hoping for trading as I have promised many kids to come in. I was going to do raffles to unload some my Gyaradoses onto them. It takes 400 Magikarp candies to make one Gyarados so they are highly coveted. They are taking up my inventory but I worked so hard on them I don't want to just grind them up for candies!<br />
<br />
Niantic focused on revamping the gym system, which are now Pokestops to spin as well. Gone are the days where I would find a few out of the way gyms, stay in it for WEEKS, and just collect poke coins. It actually isn't worth being in multiple gyms anymore. As long as your Pokemon stays in a gym for one hour per day, you earn a max of 50 Pokecoins (10 coins per minute) and even if any of the other Pokemon in different gyms are returned in the same day or stays in a gym all day, you won't collect any more coins. Pokemon in gyms will lose their CP (hit points) the longer they are left in the gym unfed and battled. Anyone from your color team can feed your Pokemon berries, pineapples or bananas, so it doesn't have to be you in person hanging out near the gym. They do get sick of eating just one thing so keep all varieties. You could be in the middle of battle and someone starts to feed them berries therby erasing all YOUR work. Not to mention, if you put something 3000 CP or above, they lose their health quicker if not give raspberries. So there are pros and cons. I feel like they were trying to get the players that haven't been as die hard as I am a chance to come back to the game without penalty.<br />
<br />
Everyday you are entitled to one RAID pass as long as you are level 5 or above, which allows you to fight alone or in a team (any team), a rare Pokemon. The raids occur randomly throughout the gyms and you have an hour to battle once the Pokemon is revealed. It looks like an egg with a countdown timer until it runs out. Once you log into an area with a raid battle, it will notify you in the top of your screen.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xZuJ4Tm0uoQ/WV01B7zzzeI/AAAAAAAABwU/2AhjP4-2jRQl2EfCEM0mPcOCAuACLXZ4ACLcBGAs/s1600/unnamed-5-e1498319841771.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="742" data-original-width="960" height="247" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xZuJ4Tm0uoQ/WV01B7zzzeI/AAAAAAAABwU/2AhjP4-2jRQl2EfCEM0mPcOCAuACLXZ4ACLcBGAs/s320/unnamed-5-e1498319841771.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FQM8-m71oGw/WV0u-TRgjHI/AAAAAAAABwM/3mEva8vDnA8aM5yyMnCXN74EE7q788wRQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_0751.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="900" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-FQM8-m71oGw/WV0u-TRgjHI/AAAAAAAABwM/3mEva8vDnA8aM5yyMnCXN74EE7q788wRQCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_0751.jpg" width="180" /></a>This means that people who have been waiting for their chance to get a Snorlax or Tyranitar are in luck especially if you can go somewhere like the Boston Common where there are multiple gyms within eyesight. The Pokemon that are available during raids will change but right now I've seen Muk, Flareon, Typhlosion, Electrabuzz, Magikarp (yes they might be a rare gold one), Tyranitar, Snorlax, and Magmar. I battled one Snorlax over by Simmons College with 8 other people. It was a 4 rated monster battle, which you can see between the egg and the timer. There was no way I could have done it alone. Once you decide to battle, you have 120 seconds to see if anyone else wants to join you. At level 35, I can fight a 2 rated monster by myself with 6 Pokemon around 2500 CP each but you also have to consider the time limit. Your Pokemon might have high CP but you can't defeat a monster like that in 180 seconds. Once you have defeated the Pokemon, you have a certain number of special Poke balls to catch it. The higher the monster rating, the harder it will be to catch so practice your EXCELLENT catches with the small red ring centers. One Snorlax was caught easily, one disappeared and I lost my one opportunity so far at a Tyranitar. All the Pokemon caught are either strong or amazing Pokemon so they are well worth the effort with high CP and good move sets. In addition to getting a chance to catch the Pokemon, victorious battles give out rare candies (which can be exchanged to ANY regular candies for one Pokemon you have but never find like Chanseys), a TM or trainer's manual which allows you to change the move sets of your Pokemon, revives, and the coveted XP/Stardust so you can level your favorite battle Pokemon. If you lose a raid, you have the option of going back in without another raid pass. If you fail to catch the Pokemon after battle however, you do not get another chance until you find another raid.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I really haven't seen too many people playing lately but once you hit a raid spot, it is hard to miss. I love that all the teams can come together to battle. It isn't just a "Oh are you team red?" The gyms themselves still can only be taken by one color but it is a nice touch to cooperate on these big battles. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For librarians who have gyms in their local area, it might be nice to post on Facebook or other social media when a raid is happening and what Pokemon it is. You have to have an account to log in periodically to check for a raid. You only have an hour to notify anyone so it couldn't be something to set up well in advance. There are also huge events going on in major cities. The first Pokefest is going on in <a href="http://www.pokemongolive.com/Fest" target="_blank">Chicago</a>. Rumor has it that they might reveal Legendary Pokemon which have not been released yet. Each team color has a special legendary Pokemon. They have only been glimpsed on their team insignia thus far. It would be amazing for the library to have a presence there. Tickets sold out in hours of the posting of the event but even if a library had a booth near the park you would see hundreds of new faces!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dSbiX9kOX6o/WV1B-P8svcI/AAAAAAAABwc/VzjBV0DFtlo3ZcT9snZM_l-3LSNV_Dn9ACLcBGAs/s1600/pokemon-go-guide-how-to-catch-articuno-and-other-legendary-pokemons.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="386" data-original-width="700" height="176" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-dSbiX9kOX6o/WV1B-P8svcI/AAAAAAAABwc/VzjBV0DFtlo3ZcT9snZM_l-3LSNV_Dn9ACLcBGAs/s320/pokemon-go-guide-how-to-catch-articuno-and-other-legendary-pokemons.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you have an account and have off desk flexibility, advertise yourself as being able to help with raids. For example, since I'm such a high level I could REALLY help out another player and I can reach the gym from our picture book area. And who wouldn't want to play Pokemon during work hours?It's creative customer service and a raid can be under 5 minutes long with battle wait time.</div>

Special thanks to the AMAZING librarian rockstar Robin Brenner for so many great ideas. It truly is worth a visit just to see her teen room. Here are a few 3D printing/marketing ideas to takeaway:<br />
<br />
Having a 3D printer filtration cart would be wonderful in our library. <a href="https://store.proto3000.com/collections/3d-printer-enclosure-and-filtration-systems" target="_blank">Look at the price if you dare.</a> Right now I have to go downstairs to retrieve prints because we are concerned about the fumes and little hands touching anything while the printer is on. I have a video camera set up downstairs using an iPad 2 and the free app called <a href="https://app.presencepro.com/" target="_blank">Presence</a> for monitoring but sometimes I do forget to keep checking the presence website while I'm on the desk especially since it makes this annoying beeping sound to say, "Are you still watching?!"..As the sign reveals on the cart, the propensity to want to lean or jostle the cart is probably high. I'm curious how many times the prints have shifted or failed due to this. Still, one can dream right?<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5Rl7g8qQPiY/WU1n0EaPGLI/AAAAAAAABuM/P8W6NV4BwmsP9gsjlz7Y_LuEcBrzQwG_QCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_0556.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-5Rl7g8qQPiY/WU1n0EaPGLI/AAAAAAAABuM/P8W6NV4BwmsP9gsjlz7Y_LuEcBrzQwG_QCLcBGAs/s200/IMG_0556.jpg" width="150" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VIn7V-AxA0A/WU1n0JfGwlI/AAAAAAAABuU/uF6UIXwBbDIpFC8Y2GDpwjd01vPMOivlQCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_0557.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-VIn7V-AxA0A/WU1n0JfGwlI/AAAAAAAABuU/uF6UIXwBbDIpFC8Y2GDpwjd01vPMOivlQCLcBGAs/s200/IMG_0557.jpg" width="150" /></a><a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AmsJU37dCqo/WU1qnE51KfI/AAAAAAAABus/tA5HvG2nw_Q5IpyWlbg1cxsM-2rSiNrKACLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_4756.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="829" data-original-width="465" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-AmsJU37dCqo/WU1qnE51KfI/AAAAAAAABus/tA5HvG2nw_Q5IpyWlbg1cxsM-2rSiNrKACLcBGAs/s320/IMG_4756.PNG" width="179" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My second takeaway was the push I needed to redo signage in the children's room. I was inspired by a post on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/groups/storytimeunderground/" target="_blank">Storytime Underground </a>Facebook group about Medfield's new signage in their library but kept putting it off. The second I stepped into the Brookline teen room I squee'd out loud at the 3D printed directory signs. It was like the peanut butter to my jelly marketing sandwich. <br />

<div>
Here are my results so far:</div>

I was going to use only 5 colors in our main room (using the <a href="http://www.tigercolor.com/color-lab/color-theory/color-harmonies.htm" target="_blank">color harmony theory</a>) then reuse the same colors in our picture book room but I hate that the bottom turned into Christmas colors. I will change the colors to pink & teal so each section, regardless of the room, will have a separate color now. Before I print it on vinyl, I attached it to a pillar to let it ruminate with us for a while. I already think it needs to be much bigger size wise. The current size is 16 x 24. I made this in <a href="https://www.canva.com/" target="_blank">Canva</a> but Publisher would work too. UPDATE: I already ended up taking it down because the arrows just aren't cutting it. We need something 3 dimensional so the arrows can point more accurately like Diagon Alley or perhaps the signage is enough?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hpMtAxnWSEQ/WVU7aVz3sVI/AAAAAAAABv4/K1T1ljXDbPE4kp9rRUwukfpd3fsbsdA-wCLcBGAs/s1600/diagon.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="270" data-original-width="340" height="254" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-hpMtAxnWSEQ/WVU7aVz3sVI/AAAAAAAABv4/K1T1ljXDbPE4kp9rRUwukfpd3fsbsdA-wCLcBGAs/s320/diagon.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Now onto the fun 3D printing part, letters are magnetized with magnetic adhesive strips and had to be printed in 3-4 letter groups due to the size of the letters vs my printing bed on the Ultimaker 2 Extended. I'm trying not to go into signage over load but you could print out numbers to correspond to the Dewey Decimal range of each isle in the non-fiction. I ended up making numbered isles for the fiction section already. The color coding is a big hit so far. It is much easier than pointing. Now I can say it is in Isle 2, see that green 2, under KINNEY. (Guess what's our most popular question). </div>

<br />
The latest craze seems to be these Fidget spinners for idle hands. They can easily be 3D printed in an hour from the thousands of already made files out there in tinkercad and other sites.<br />
<br />
If you have a 3D printing class coming up at the library hosting a fidget spinner design course in tinkercad will be a sure sell out. People are already started to create their own tutorials based on the size of their ball bearings.<br />

I still get beaten out of our library gym every few days and I still see some kids playing but it has not been on the tip of anyone's tongues since the holidays hit. The holidays tried to keep the fervor up by offering special incentives during Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas and the lastly on Valentine's Day. Special Pokemon increased spawn rates, candies were doubled, lures lasted for 6 hours, etc. as long as you logged in during the week of the holiday and kept up with the app updates.<br />

You may or may not know that Niantic released a huge update last Thursday, adding 80 new Pokemon called "Generation 2" that are available to catch. Most of them look like insects of some form or another. This is a huge score for the game as even the most seasoned players are getting tired of catching the common Pidgies and Weedles just for stardust or forever walking 10K eggs in hope of getting one of the elusive rare Pokemon they are missing. </div>
<div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<b>What librarians need to know:</b> Trading is still not an option, but anyone with a Pokestop near their library can now drop lures for a crowd that is eager to catch all the new Pokemon. I walked 26 miles this weekend trying to catch as many new ones as I could. I'm not exaggerating. Plus I'm trying to get my 1 Chansey to evolve into a Blissy which is one of the biggest gym competitors in the game. If you hold a particular gym for 21 hours, you get coins and extra Stardust. This keeps going every 21 hours after redemption until you get kicked off by another team. Since Chansey's are rare, I have to walk the Chansey as my companion. For every 5 Kilometers I walk, I get another candy. Needless to say, I have to walk another 200K for this end. </div>
<div>
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qRR5yADNHdY/WKyZwkhOI8I/AAAAAAAABpA/ebDOb4bxxMUPzxscHiM5spCKl0SSORYMQCLcB/s1600/IMG_0135.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qRR5yADNHdY/WKyZwkhOI8I/AAAAAAAABpA/ebDOb4bxxMUPzxscHiM5spCKl0SSORYMQCLcB/s320/IMG_0135.PNG" width="180" /></a></div>
<div>
Swinubs, Sentrets, Ledybas and Natus are common to find in most areas with an increased spawn rate (at least for now) in the wild. Think Pidgies, Weedles, and Spearows of Generation 1, they're everywhere. The catching screen has changed to make it easier to select which Pokeball to use as well as adding Nanab berries which can try to immobilize Pokemon (they can now zig zag around the screen to avoid being caught) and Pinap berries that will increase the amount of candy you get if you catch it while "under its spell". These new berries can be found by spinning Pokestops. Each Pokemon that you try to catch can only be fed with one berry. The Razz berry is still the one to go to if you really want to ensure a successful capture.</div>
</div>
<div>
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-69QipLtxwZI/WKyV4vIj8mI/AAAAAAAABow/r-mAnDN0mq0Vvk3pnGWrX-8W0BUekqu_wCLcB/s1600/IMG_0134.PNG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-69QipLtxwZI/WKyV4vIj8mI/AAAAAAAABow/r-mAnDN0mq0Vvk3pnGWrX-8W0BUekqu_wCLcB/s320/IMG_0134.PNG" width="180" /></a></div>
<div>
<br />
Some of the Generation 1 Pokemon now have an additional evolvement shown in pink that requires a "special item" like a sun stone in addition to a number of candies required from catching a certain amount of them. These are RARE. I must have spun about 100 stops this weekend only to get 1! They are completely randomly but having a stop at your library helps meet that end, and if you are lucky to have more than 1 stop, consider it time for another Pokewalk while the snow is melted. I wish we knew Generation 2 was coming with a bit more notice because school vacation would have been a great opportunity for programming.</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
If you are curious whether special rare Pokemon are near you that you can advertise on social media, consider using the <a href="https://thesilphroad.com/" target="_blank">Silph Road</a>, a website where players report on "nests". Every update changes what nest is currently in a certain area but it could last for a few weeks at least. I found myself driving around last night looking for Wobuffets after reported and confirmed sightings in a local field in Quincy using their Nest Atlas. Silph Road is actually a great resource for all things Pokemon and a perfect jumping off point from this article. Happy hunting!</div>

<a href="https://dmyhprcifcyj5.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/cozmo-landingpage-imgs/cozmo-game-mobile.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="221" src="https://dmyhprcifcyj5.cloudfront.net/sites/default/files/cozmo-landingpage-imgs/cozmo-game-mobile.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
I was so excited to get the robot, Cozmo from Anki which I have been <a href="http://librarymakerspace.blogspot.com/2016/12/cozmo-new-library-pet.html" target="_blank">drooling over</a> since before Christmas. He is finally available for purchase on <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Anki-000-00048-Cozmo/dp/B01GA1298S/ref=sr_1_1?s=toys-and-games&ie=UTF8&qid=1486236026&sr=1-1&keywords=cozmo" target="_blank">Amazon</a> for $180. He lives up to the hype and then some. My one hiccup so far has been syncing him to one of our iPads through Apple Configurator. I had to unsupervise the device completely because the free app needs an iTunes account attached to the iPad to run. Once I installed it from the iPad directly rather than through Configurator it worked fine. <i>If you have no idea what I am talking about, you probably use gift cards to purchase apps rather than the Volume Purchasing program. </i><br />
<br />
If you wanted him available for patron checkout, he can be synced to multiple devices (just not more than one running at the same time). He will remember all his learning so once you unlock games for the first time he will remember from one device to another. He also remembers everyone "he meets" so if you run the meet Cozmo feature, look at him, and then type in your name he will remember you across devices. He can also remember pets with the latest update. When you are in explorer mode, you can see what he sees and your name will come up on the screen when he looks at you. If you press greet, he will say your name...kinda creepy at first but totally cool.<br />
<br />
After only a few hours of game play, I have unlocked all the available games and tricks he can do so far, however, he still has daily tasks every time you sign in such as "let him play by himself for 10 minutes" or "play memory match without any errors" to keep you motivated. For every task completed he earns sparks and bits which can be used to unlock new features, make him say something or "work out" with the cubes.<br />
<br />
On the bottom right of the home screen, you can see what Cozmo is doing/thinking unless you are controlling him in expolorer mode. Sometimes it says he is upset, usually if you try to pick him up or won't play with him, sometimes he's just looking around, and sometimes he wants to pounce on your finger. I love that he wants to be petulant and pounce on your finger. Does it make me a bad parent if I keep placating him? He's just so darn cute! Apparently he was designed by a <a href="http://www.roboticstrends.com/article/code_friendly_sdk_makes_cozmo_a_better_pal" target="_blank">Pixar animator so no wonder why he reminds me of Wall-E. </a><br />
<br />
He has fallen off the table a few times so be careful and make sure to leave a clear space for him to roam. When I had begun to play games with him like quick tap, I won easily but as the game has become harder, he wins much more often.<br />
<br />
Apparently there is more to come with <a href="https://developer.anki.com/en-us/company/shipping-information" target="_blank">programming features to customize his capabilities. </a>So he's more than just a pretty face, he can actually teach code with Python.<br />

<br />
<br />

<br /></center>
<center>
I split this Disney castle that I found on Tinkercad for a student's Florida project. It was going to be over 10 hours so I split it in half so we didn't have to "print overnight". I tried to split this object in CURA first but no luck. </center>
<center>

<center>
<br /></center>

A little bit of superglue and this one will be ready to go. Just be sure that you don't adjust the size while in Cura because the halves won't sync up. </center>

Here's a sneak peek at one worth discussing...<br />

children's room in an effort to introduce <a href="http://www.duxburyfreelibrary.org/general_info/toolboxes.html" target="_blank">non-traditional circulating items</a> for <a href="http://librarymakerspace.blogspot.com/2015/11/circulating-science-toys.html" target="_blank">over a year now</a>. We have littleBits, Raspberry Pi 2, Sphero, Cubelets, KEVA planks and Makey Makeys. Our newest editions were the robots, Dash and BeeBot, which gained popularity after we had them out to test during the <a href="http://librarymakerspace.blogspot.com/2016/12/happy-hour-of-code-week.html" target="_blank">Hour of Code</a>. I happen to be showing one of the kids the <a href="http://littlebits.cc/shop/bits" target="_blank">littleBits</a> kit, since all the robotics kits were out, when I noticed some bits are just not holding up during circulation.<br />
<br />
Our littleBits kit included Lego adapters, mounting boards, and the small starter kit which doesn't seem to be available anymore with 10 bits included. If you are new to littleBits, they are small magnetic pieces, each with their own function, that can be put together to make an electronic invention. Bits include lights, sensors, motors and speakers. You can integrate them into recyclables, Lego projects, <a href="http://librarymakerspace.blogspot.com/2014/12/diy-electronic-ugly-sweater-part-2.html" target="_blank">sewing projects</a>...you name it! For a while, we used them in house for makerspace activities but we decided to try to circulate them for personal patron use. If you are looking to go this route, here's some advice:<br />
<br />
<br />
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SnaRk4TwkFA/WFqsnrXmnkI/AAAAAAAABj0/s0MtYGImdGYo0DGmyRH0BQjaMlBF93MSACLcB/s1600/IMG_4776.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"></a><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zOhiiJBaAvU/WFqshaqMiDI/AAAAAAAABjo/EoaCl_toxegEpfC9pAexTt_L5rRi4rsRwCLcB/s1600/IMG_4778.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="150" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-zOhiiJBaAvU/WFqshaqMiDI/AAAAAAAABjo/EoaCl_toxegEpfC9pAexTt_L5rRi4rsRwCLcB/s200/IMG_4778.JPG" width="200" /></a><img border="0" height="200" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-SnaRk4TwkFA/WFqsnrXmnkI/AAAAAAAABj0/s0MtYGImdGYo0DGmyRH0BQjaMlBF93MSACLcB/s200/IMG_4776.JPG" width="150" /><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qnvu-mfDB9A/WFqsnrCnf6I/AAAAAAAABjs/LGyJ9oihumIdykOpOkWUIACsISvyh3vWwCLcB/s1600/IMG_4775.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Qnvu-mfDB9A/WFqsnrCnf6I/AAAAAAAABjs/LGyJ9oihumIdykOpOkWUIACsISvyh3vWwCLcB/s320/IMG_4775.JPG" width="320" /></a>First thing to watch is the battery wire. You might want to electrical tape it because they are constantly breaking. I have already replaced this at least 3 times. I have no idea why there's exposed wires on there to begin with.<br />
<br />
2nd thing to watch is the plastic screw driver which is necessary to change the color of lights on the LED or the pulse speed input so it's something that's necessary but apparently fragile as the head usually breaks off.<br />
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fu382yiGenU/WFqsof_2IzI/AAAAAAAABkA/ZiXIk_g83rcwH6HQrZhKnP-jQO9FlP0XwCLcB/s1600/IMG_4780.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-fu382yiGenU/WFqsof_2IzI/AAAAAAAABkA/ZiXIk_g83rcwH6HQrZhKnP-jQO9FlP0XwCLcB/s200/IMG_4780.JPG" width="150" /></a><br />
<br />
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uIz7B3oq0NM/WFqsocVMopI/AAAAAAAABkM/c_sVT9yzADYfAcX0KoRNq4m6nPRcHGd2QCEw/s1600/IMG_4779.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="200" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-uIz7B3oq0NM/WFqsocVMopI/AAAAAAAABkM/c_sVT9yzADYfAcX0KoRNq4m6nPRcHGd2QCEw/s200/IMG_4779.JPG" width="150" /></a>3rd thing that breaks continually is the vibrating motor output which also has an exposed wire between the motor itself and the bit. Perhaps electric tape would help in this instance too? Or just take my advice and get another output that's just as fun but less exposed like the Buzzer. I have been keeping my eye on the pressure sensor input as well since it says DO NOT BEND and yet it always comes back with a bit of a crease (but still works::knock on wood::). I might swap that out for the motion sensor input since it seems more durable. I would advise to take out anything with exposed wires or fragile components and save those for in house projects. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H93zBhrigDg/WFq0WrQD3XI/AAAAAAAABko/CdmOrJ6j4agsexKJ9Grhjia60aiFl7_OgCLcB/s1600/IMG_4783.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H93zBhrigDg/WFq0WrQD3XI/AAAAAAAABko/CdmOrJ6j4agsexKJ9Grhjia60aiFl7_OgCLcB/s400/IMG_4783.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
My other failed attempt at a science kit this year is the <a href="http://the3doodler.com/" target="_blank">3Doodler</a> 2.0, the first plastic extruding 3D pen, which has too many nozzle and jamming issues. One caused by even a seasoned user like myself while prepping it for circulation. The nozzle broke straight off while I was trying to fix a jam. The previous user left filament in the pen which I can image happening often during circulation as well. Even though my boyfriend swears I have hulk hands, I WAS being careful and following the instructions to the letter. Here are some examples of the fine details to fixing jams with this pen:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zeRFxhDK7UI/WFq0W5JpyPI/AAAAAAAABks/vegaAhE8p008fcgxPi0eLQkeYUuSL37QgCLcB/s1600/IMG_4782.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-zeRFxhDK7UI/WFq0W5JpyPI/AAAAAAAABks/vegaAhE8p008fcgxPi0eLQkeYUuSL37QgCLcB/s400/IMG_4782.JPG" width="300" /></a></div>
<br />
<i>Unscrew the nozzle only when the pen is hot </i>(Spoiler: the nozzle isn't that secure in the removal tool once out so don't do it over your lap). <i>It also makes references to "pulling out" the filament GENTLY or it could ruin the gears inside.</i> Then using another special tool (which could get lost easily) to push filament through the pen, <i>stopping when you feel resistance</i>..this is all very detailed, delicate work that could occur at home with the patron or every time this comes back jammed to the librarian.<br />
<br />
Even normal pen usage is quite detail oriented, you have to be sure that the temperature matches the filament being used and (spoiler: once out of the package PLA and ABS look the same!) So if you were going through with the kit, I'd only keep one or the other in there so they don't get mixed up. <br />
<br />
So moral of this story is science kits are a wonderful thing to add to your library collection but there is always time to reflect on the number and delicacy of the pieces being circulated.<br />

I was infuriated that there weren't any soldering videos out there for this so called "beginner" project so I made my own with mistakes and all. Keep in mind I've only soldered twice in my life. Once I made a <a href="http://shop.evilmadscientist.com/productsmenu/152" target="_blank">Larson Scanner</a> for a pumpkin (Battlestar Galactica Cylon) and the second time I made a <a href="http://www.makershed.com/products/learn-to-solder-skill-badge-kit" target="_blank">Maker Bot badge.</a> <br />
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Keeping with the Christmas theme for the makerspace events this month, I used the <a href="https://www.amazon.com/Velleman-MK100-Electronic-Christmas-Tree/dp/B004NDXAHK" target="_blank">Velleman MK100 kit Christmas Tree. </a> I will tell you out of the three projects the Maker Bot badge is where to start as a "beginner". When I hosted the class last Saturday, anyone who hadn't soldered before watched a brief intro video <a href="https://learn.adafruit.com/lets-put-leds-in-things/soldering" target="_blank">Soldering 101 from Adafruit</a> (I just skipped to where there are close ups of the soldering procedure) and then I supervised while they made a Maker Bot badge. I am happy to say that all the kids successfully finished the tree and badge in an hour and they all worked (SPOILER: unlike my first try). The middle schoolers were on their own but Gr. 4-6 required a parent to help. It made my day that a dad and daughter pair came to complete the project.<br />

I saw a very interesting ad on Hulu last week which introduced me to <a href="https://anki.com/en-us/cozmo" target="_blank">Cozmo</a>, the latest edition of mass market toy robots. Cozmo is Wall-E come to life literally AND I NEED HIM.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.designboom.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/cozm-anki-designboom-041-818x600.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="234" src="https://www.designboom.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/cozm-anki-designboom-041-818x600.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
He has his own personality that is directly affected by your actions with facial recognition software so he can actually recognize you and learn your name. He can request if you'd like to play through a phone or iPad and if you say no, he gets SAD! The more you play with Cozmo, the more features you unlock. Here is an awesome unboxing and demo of his skill set from Dad Does. He might be this year's hottest Christmas toy since he's "out of stock" at the moment everywhere and is going on e-bay for $500.<br />
<br />
<br />

</center>
<center>
Needless to say, this is on my library wishlist. Imagine kids coming to visit Cozmo and he would recognize them and want to play ? He's the new allergy friendly library pet! TAKE MY MONEY!</center>

<br />
Don't forget that next week is the <a href="https://hourofcode.com/us" target="_blank">Hour of Code</a>, a global initiative to entice people of all ages to learn one hour of coding through games. You don't need to do anything more than download some promotional materials and lead patrons to the website for them to sign in. To extend the hour of code beyond the website, we'll be putting out some of our robots to try.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NHRVPicusXE/WEGxCMUwJvI/AAAAAAAABiQ/kULhZT2k4JwYg28Ot_plPxODaakmR3LNQCLcB/s1600/robots.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-NHRVPicusXE/WEGxCMUwJvI/AAAAAAAABiQ/kULhZT2k4JwYg28Ot_plPxODaakmR3LNQCLcB/s320/robots.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
This year's newest addition to our circulating collection is the adorable Dash robot. Who is by far my favorite robot that I have played with because Dash actually has a personality! I immediately wanted to hug him and yell <a href="https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=9&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=0ahUKEwjXy-feg9bQAhWp6IMKHe9oDLYQtwIINDAI&url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DWlgJs_G8Co8&usg=AFQjCNEo38D7hP3qROvM2eRDw-PzIZ3SnA" target="_blank">"Johnny 5 Alive!"</a> Dash talks, blinks, lights up and runs around on 3 wheels. He has a companion robot, Dot, many fun accessories, and even Lego brick adapters.<br />
<br />
The apps that I downloaded for him on our iPad gen. 2 (gen 1 won't work) are:<br />
<br />
<a href="https://www.makewonder.com/apps/blockly" target="_blank">Blockly</a><br />
<a href="https://www.makewonder.com/apps/path" target="_blank">Path</a><br />
<a href="https://itunes.apple.com/ca/app/blockly-jr.-everyone-can-program/id1138230508?mt=8" target="_blank">Blockly Jr.</a><br />
<a href="https://www.makewonder.com/apps/path" target="_blank">Wonder</a><br />
<br />
Wonder is the hardest and least intuitive app, aimed for experienced robotics users or at least middle school students with Path being the easiest. I posted a video of Dash at the race track using Path on <a href="https://www.instagram.com/p/BNhZ4ZZBDXO/?taken-by=duxburyfreelibrary" target="_blank">Instagram</a>. Blockly took a few minutes to get going but if you have any experience with Scratch programs it will be immediately understood. All of these are free downloads.<br />
<br />
My other new robot this year is for the preschool set called <a href="https://www.bee-bot.us/" target="_blank">Bee Bot</a>. He doesn't require an iPad and is simply there to teach basic order of operations using 7 buttons on his back: LEFT, RIGHT, FORWARD, BACKWARD, STOP, PAUSE & GO. Here is a <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=52ZuenJlFyE" target="_blank">great classroom example of its use. </a> You could build it a little obstacle course and challenge kids to safely make Bee Bot go through the path.<br />
<br />
I was practicing with Dash today at the desk and a little boy about 2 came up to it completely in awe. He WOULD NOT talk to me but he readily said, "Goodbye Dash!" on his way out. His grandmother had said this is probably his first experience seeing a robot and isn't that what the " Library of the Future" is all about?Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8597750566049912199.post-28538870714865394232016-11-30T11:57:00.003-08:002016-11-30T11:57:50.087-08:003D Printing Holiday OrnamentsThis holiday season, I was inspired by snowflake silhouette 3D prints and wanted to teach a class using the draw-print image method <a href="http://librarymakerspace.blogspot.com/2016/02/converting-drawn-image-to-3d-print.html" target="_blank">I have blogged about previously</a>.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g-dudSkwGz0/WD8uB6T6wXI/AAAAAAAABhU/T-YtRJdeUcY4Fn2NGkwczplLbo9lkRVjwCLcB/s1600/snowflake-ornament-shapeways-4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="199" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-g-dudSkwGz0/WD8uB6T6wXI/AAAAAAAABhU/T-YtRJdeUcY4Fn2NGkwczplLbo9lkRVjwCLcB/s200/snowflake-ornament-shapeways-4.jpg" width="200" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
This time I would skip the drawing step and use google images to find a pre-made silhouette. I started by googling Mario star silhouette. I saved the file as a JPG then converted to SVG using <a href="http://www.online-convert.com/" target="_blank">online-convert</a>, imported into <a href="https://www.tinkercad.com/" target="_blank">Tinkercad</a>, then hit CTRL + D multiple times for smart duplicate (thank you <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iBVWCLf-F9c#action=share" target="_blank">Tinkertips</a>). I tried once with mario stars and twice with the Doctor Who Tardis.<br />
<br />
<br />
<center>
<iframe allowfullscreen="" frameborder="0" height="270" src="https://www.youtube.com/embed/iBVWCLf-F9c" width="480"></iframe><center>
</center>
<center>
Here are my results..<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iDBL107NQlc/WD8haNughVI/AAAAAAAABgI/Ds9JIwVUc0AixWzk97uGB-_4XpZbnddTACLcB/s1600/IMG_4724.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-iDBL107NQlc/WD8haNughVI/AAAAAAAABgI/Ds9JIwVUc0AixWzk97uGB-_4XpZbnddTACLcB/s320/IMG_4724.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
My conclusion was trying to teach a class in this is much too complicated for beginners. It required much more precision (as shown in the Mario star snowflake that broke apart because the stars weren't connected enough) as well as finding silhouettes that lend themselves to 3D printing. The Tardis was having issues because of design alone. By making the Tardis 20% fill, it wasn't enough for the 48 mm size to complete the shape, then when almost doubled to 98 mm it was still stringy and took over 4 hours..which anyone who has a 3D printer knows that it could be many things in the "under extruding" troubleshooting category. Maybe the nozzle retraction, maybe the nozzle needed to be hotter, etc. I gave up for now.<br />
<br />
Moral of the story I went to doing very simple ornaments like the one shown below. These were 2 hour or less designs using the Google image search- print silhouette method.</center>
<center>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FdP4xmgUHQU/WD8iK87iZ0I/AAAAAAAABgU/Ux0ePI4jhisAwh6lPKycrtN8Ru24Hd1yQCLcB/s1600/xmasornaments.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-FdP4xmgUHQU/WD8iK87iZ0I/AAAAAAAABgU/Ux0ePI4jhisAwh6lPKycrtN8Ru24Hd1yQCLcB/s320/xmasornaments.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
</center>
<center>
<br /></center>
<center>
Let's go step by step with the tree..</center>
<center>
<br /></center>
<center>
1. Google image search for "Christmas Tree silhouette", right click on mouse and SAVE IMAGE AS. </center>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
2. Go to online-convert.com. Under image converter chose SAVE AS SVG, click GO.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
3. Next page, CHOOSE FILE, then scroll down to CONVERT FILE. </div>

<br />
4. Open Tinkercad, CREATE NEW DESIGN and go to IMPORT (right side toolbar). I recommend changing the settings to scale to 10% with 5mm thickness otherwise it is going to be HUGE on the screen. Click IMPORT.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
5. Add cylinders for the "balls" , I just got one to the size of my liking, turned it into a hole using the INSPECTOR, and then copy and pasted a few more so they are the same size and moved them around the tree</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XQ0n5u560U8/WD8pijaKRlI/AAAAAAAABhA/JUpbc-MbaVo9uP54NWA338odaZcH4NofgCEw/s1600/decoration1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="143" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-XQ0n5u560U8/WD8pijaKRlI/AAAAAAAABhA/JUpbc-MbaVo9uP54NWA338odaZcH4NofgCEw/s320/decoration1.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
6. Add a ring shape to the top. (Ignore the ring in the last picture I'm working backwards in the tutorial)<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fMkhnuiwsdI/WD8pjPG5-NI/AAAAAAAABhA/_2EPuB5Sq1AM1d8YwyFlPlrl7Si41rXQgCEw/s1600/decorations5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fMkhnuiwsdI/WD8pjPG5-NI/AAAAAAAABhA/_2EPuB5Sq1AM1d8YwyFlPlrl7Si41rXQgCEw/s320/decorations5.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
7. Highlight everything and click on GROUP. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--zpxb-DPWdA/WD8pjZXbwQI/AAAAAAAABhA/4P91GfqVJDkHtSibHJBojy5NetUA0tllgCEw/s1600/decorations6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/--zpxb-DPWdA/WD8pjZXbwQI/AAAAAAAABhA/4P91GfqVJDkHtSibHJBojy5NetUA0tllgCEw/s320/decorations6.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are a few different avenues students could go in. They could make cylinders sit on top of the tree for christmas balls, add letters, star on top, or make an ornament of their favorite characters instead to make it a bit less Christmas focused and potential for a fun Hanukkah gift!</div>
